Protecting Your Hearing From Noise

Loud noises are a source of hearing loss that impacts billions of people worldwide.  Protective measures can help prevent noise-induced hearing loss and help you hear your best.
Hearing loss can happen over time. Even if our hearing is getting worse with age, noise can damage the tiny hairs in the cochlea. People who work in noisy places without wearing any protection have an increased risk of this type of hearing loss.
The World Health Organization recently reported that 1.1 billion young adults have an increased risk of hearing loss, because they use headphones to listen to loud music for a long time.
Apart from being exposed to loud noises for a long time, you can also have hearing loss from sudden loud sounds. This type of hearing loss is called acoustic trauma and it results from exposure to a sudden loud noise such as an explosion, gunshots, etc. It’s difficult to protect against because these types of noises happen suddenly and do not give enough time for protective methods.
You can reduce the chances of hearing loss by wearing protective gear like earplugs or earmuffs. Earplugs help protect against low frequency sounds while earmuffs protect against high frequency sounds.
To protect your ears, you can use some practical methods. If you watch a movie on TV and it’s really loud, then turn the volume down. It’s also good to talk in a normal voice to someone sitting 2 meters away from you. Also, try not to listen to music or movies too loudly on an electronic device like your phone or tablet. This will help prevent ear problems later in life.
